ABSTRACT
Models play an important role in many different disciplines. The
broad scope of applicability of models results in a wide range of
types of models for a given system component, a range
of system components that are of interest to be modeled, and an
assortment of levels of detail provided in models.
We introduce a classification system for models of networked embedded
systems such as sensor networks, provide a taxonomy of existing
research on models in terms of the presented classification framework,
and highlight example applications of models in the research
literature. Based on the insight gained in developing the classification
framework and taxonomy, we discuss possible future modeling
directions in the area of wireless sensor networks.
